Jun 26, 2009 by elbaj, I had Mirena for three years, after the birth of my second baby. Insertion was awful, totally painful, and, like many of you, I immediately suffered from horrible side effects which for THREE YEARS did not suspect where due to Mirena! I checked my thyroid, wondered what was wrong with me. Felt strange sudden heat waves, depression, fatigue, moodiness, acne, 35 pounds of weight gain in 3 years and absolutely no weight loss no matter what I did, insomnia. I'd never been hospitalized in my life, but while I was on Mirena, I was diagnosed with Alopecia, was paralyzed a few months later and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, then diagnosed with depression and on Prozac - and I just had that blasted IUD removed yesterday. I'm apalled to read of so many horrible side effects we've all had to suffer for so many years. Bayer should be ashamed of themselves! Do they realize that little plastic thing has thrown our bodies out of whack? How long is it going to take for me to get my body back?!?!?!?! For those of you thinking of removal, DO IT! My experience with removal wasn't painful, but I am very moody today, very angry, very tired, and with cramps. There is a reason why we ovulate, and a 'why' for our menstrual cycle. To think how abnormal not having a period for three years is makes me wonder what on Earth made me want to put in in the first place. Do not, for anything, compromise your bodies, ladies! We have only one, and as I sit here, wondering when I'm going to have my periods back, my normal hormones, my SELF, I really wish I'd never even heard the name Mirena. June 18, 2009

rebecca wrote i am a nurse and have a sister who has the mirena implanted shortly after her second child. i am trying to convince her that the mirena could be causing all of the symptoms. i also have stated to her that the majority of her symptoms could also be related to a thyroid issue possibly brought on by the mirena or her last pregnancy. she has had unusual symptoms in which no one has mentioned though. her whole body will go numb and her hands and feet turn inward. she will seem like she is having a seizure only knows everything going on. can only mumble to u. docs call it a panic attack without researching anything. c/o severe headaches, severe weight loss. she has lost approx 20 lbs in 2 months. Also frequently tells me "I feel like i have the flu" thank you for all of you for your postings. more ammunition to have her have it removed. concerned sister

My marriage is suffering miserably because of my mood swings, lack of sex drive, headaches etc. I too have an apt to have it removed and I just can't believe the little sheet I signed before the insertion didn't really tell you what could happen. I have had horrible back pain, painful intercourse, migraines........UGHHH I'm just so damn mad! I know everyone responds differently to Mirean but please.!Good luck to all.

Fred Bloem, MD – Holistic Physician The Mirena Menace: Are IUDs Intra-Uterine Dangers? dr bloem 11:41 pm on June 13, 2009 From time to time patients come into my office who are using the Mirena birth control method. Mirena is a T-shaped, plastic IUD (intrauterine contraceptive device) that is inserted by a physician into the the vagina, passed through the cervix, and implanted in the uterus. It stays in place for five years while it releases levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel is a chemical that is not normally found in the human body. Many health professionals refer to levonorgestrel as a “progestin” or “progestagen”. This misleading term leads many to believe that progestins are somehow related to the hormone progesterone that the human body produces. Nothing could be further from the truth. Because their biochemical structure is different, all progestins have hormone disrupting effects and their effects are opposite to the effects of progesterone. Therefore it is not surprising that many women experience adverse reactions while they are using Mirena. Levonorgestrel is found in many oral contraceptives and it was also the active ingredient of Norplant which consisted of implants that were injected into women’s upper arms. Some Norplant users experienced significant side effects. Some women choose Mirena because they tend forget to take oral contraceptives and because they want the security of knowing that for five years they will not have any children unless they remove it. It is believed to be 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy. This is how Mirena works: It blocks sperm from reaching or fertilizing the egg. It makes the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in less menstrual bleeding over time). It stops the release of your egg from the ovaries. Here is a list of common side effects: Prolonged menstrual bleeding Prolonged uterine cramping Dizziness Weight gain Low back pain Headache Stuffy nose Depression Abnormal Pap smears Ectopic pregnancy (which can be life-threatening and result in infertility) Intrauterine pregnancy (birth defects are a possibility) Sepsis (an infection which can be fatal) Pelvic inflammatory disease (which can result in infertility) Irregular Bleeding and Amenorrhea (no periods) Embedment (in the uterine wall) Perforation (of the uterus or cervix) Ovarian cysts (can cause severe mid-cycle pain) Breast cancer Risk of Mortality (risk of dying is low Lower abdominal pain Upper respiratory infection Leukorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge) Nausea Headache Nervousness Vaginitis (irritation or inflammation of the vagina) Dysmenorrhea (cramps or painful periods) Breast pain Skin disorder Acne Decreased libido Hypertension Sinusitis Many women don’t even come back for follow up with the physician who inserted the IUD. As a result physicians often don’t make the connection between these women’s health complaints and the levonorgestrel that is being released from their Mirena IUD. Some women even forget to mention to their physicians that they are using Mirena because they don’t consider it a medication or a drug that they are using. Something else that may make it difficult to correlate certain symptoms with the Mirena IUD is that many of the side effects are nonspecific and that they may be ascribed to other factors. Some women consider the lack of menstrual periods to be a blessing. However, having normal, regular menstrual periods are a normal and essential part of being a healthy woman. Medications and devices that contain levonorgestrel are marketed without regard to the health of women and children. They are marketed to pregnant women for use after pregnancy. A study done in Mexico with breastfeeding Norplant users found that their infants had significantly modified thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. According to Bayer, the company that makes the Mirena IUD, “MIRENA is an effective, long-acting and reversible method of birth control… that delivers 20 µg/day of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus and protects against pregnancy for up to 5 full years. Due to the local action of levonorgestrel on the endometrium, there is often frequent irregular bleeding or spotting during the first 3-6 months of use. The number of days with bleeding or spotting decreases gradually, and by the end of the first year approximately 20% of women will experience a total absence of bleeding. …A decision to use MIRENA must include consideration of the risks of PID [pelvic inflammatory disease]. Candidates should have no history of ectopic pregnancy or a condition that predisposes to ectopic pregnancy.” In Norway there was a one six-year followup study that followed breastfeeding infants exposed to levonorgestrel (Norplant) and that found that they had higher incidence rates of respiratory infections, skin conditions and eye infections than the control group. There were later were found to have a higher proportion of “neurological conditions.” My advice to women who are using Mirena is to have it removed as soon as possible. It’s not worth it. Please don’t gamble with your health. Stay away from any chemical contraceptive method, including oral contraceptives and contraceptive injections such as Depo Provera. I have seen many women whose health was drastically altered because of these poisonous drugs. Instead, I recommend natural family planning or barrier contraceptive methods such as condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms in combination with the use of spermicides.

If you have completed your family, you can take control with Essure®. It’s the most effective protection available to a woman against an unplanned pregnancy. The incision free placement of the tubal micro inserts takes only 15 minutes, with most women returning to regular activities the next day.
Surprisingly despite all the available methods for contraception, over half the pregnancies conceived in the United States are unplanned. Even when used correctly birth control pills fail 5% and condoms 15%, per year. Are you comfortable with this risk of having an unplanned pregnancy? If you or someone you know has completed their family and are considering a form of permanent birth control, such as tubal ligation or a partner’s vasectomy, we would like to educate you about the Essure® procedure. The Essure® procedure is different than the traditional method of a surgical tubal ligation. With Essure® there is no cutting into the body. Instead, your doctor inserts spring-like coils, called micro-inserts, through the body’s natural pathway (vagina, cervix, and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes. Since most women only report mild cramps, you have the choice of having the procedure performed without general anesthesia. In fact, many women choose to have their Essure® performed in the convenience of our office. The doctors at Women's Health Specialists were the first to perform Essure® in our community, and serve as instructors for other doctors desiring to learn the procedure. During the first 3 months following the procedure, your body and the micro-inserts work together to form a tissue barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. During this time, you will need to use another form of birth control. Then you will have an Essure® Confirmation Test, a special type of x-ray to confirm that your tubes are completely blocked and you can rely solely on Essure® for birth control. Unlike birth control pills, patches, rings, injections, and some forms of IUDs, Essure® does not contain hormones to interfere with your natural menstrual cycle. Your periods should more or less continue in their natural state. Clinical studies have shown Essure® to be 99.85% effective at preventing an unplanned pregnancy, surpassing traditional tubal ligation. Consequently, it is not surprising that Essure® is quickly becoming the preferred method for women seeking permanent birth control; because of less risks, discomfort, and downtime. Most women only experience mild cramps afterwards and return to their regular activities the following day. 12:37 PM | Permalink | click to add a comment
How to Tell if an IUD Has Slipped An IUD is a plastic, T-shaped device--with a string hanging off the straight end--that is placed in the uterus for purposes of contraception.
While the new IUDs are relatively safe compared to some of the older designs, it is still possible for an IUD to slip and end up in the wrong place. Since that can be dangerous to your health and make it possible for you to get pregnant (which of course defeats the purpose of having one), it is important to know how to tell if your IUD has slipped.
1 Check to see if you can find the strings. If they have disappeared or there is too much of the string hanging down into the vagina, your IUD has slipped into a different position from where the doctor originally placed it.
2 Check your cervix; can you feel the tip of the IUD? If so, your IUD has moved.
3 Notice if sex is painful. If it is, and/or your partner can feel the IUD, it has slipped.
4 Keep an eye out during your period; while this is rare, an IUD will occasionally be expelled from the body. This usually happens during your period and during the first 3 months. This is more than just slippage, but it is a possibility to be aware of.
5 Check for excessive or abnormal bleeding. If you begin bleeding at a time when you normally would not, and the bleeding is heavy, your IUD may have slipped.
6 Check for abnormal vaginal discharge . This can be a sign that your IUD has slipped.
7 Check for cramping and/or pain. If you have either of these symptoms, there is a chance the IUD has slipped. This can happen anytime in the first few months of IUD insertion.
Acne The hormones in the Mirena IUD can cause some women to develop acne and other skin problems , such as rashes or itching. Decreased Milk Production In women who are nursing, the hormones in the Mirena IUD can cause a decrease in the production of breast milk, and the hormones may be passed through the milk into the infant. Digestive side effects of Mirena include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramping, which may be severe and require urgent medical treatment. Mental Health Side effects on mental health caused by Mirena include depression, irritability, sudden mood changes and loss of interest in sexual activity. Irregular Bleeding Mirena may cause women to have irregular menstrual periods or short periods of bleeding in between periods, as well as entirely missed periods. Neurological Neurological side effects of Mirena require prompt medical evaluation and include sudden dizziness, severe headaches and numbness or paralysis on one side of the body. Blood Clot Sudden or severe pelvic or leg pain or pain and tightness in the chest are serious side effects that may indicate a blood clot, which is a life threatening condition. 12:10 PM | Permalink | click to add a comment June 3, 2009

i have mirena right now and i feel the same at all of u girls i m sick of this feeling i m ALL THE TIME MOODY ALSO I FEEL LIKE SOCCER BALL MY BREAST ARE HUGE AND I FEEL FAT I M NOT FAT BUT I FEEL MAXIVE AND YES I CAN'T LOSE ANY WEIGHT I M SICK OF THIS SOME PLZZZ HELP I WANT TO REMOVE IT I M SO SICK I ALWAYS HAVE HEADACHES DEPRESSION I WANT TO KILL MYSELF I M REALLY SICK OF THIS ---------------------------------------------------------------- May 29th20094:40 PM Thank you so much for all your posts guys!! I just googled Mirena side effects today just trying to check ANYTHING that would explain my recent experiences. I sat her bawling while calling my doctor to insist it's removed immediately. I had it inserted in December after having baby #3 in October. I finally got my girl after 2 boys and a few miscarriages and wasn't certain what to expect. I am only 25 and didn't want something permanent or really any drugs put into me on a consistent basis. When the doctor pushed Mirena I happily said okay! Sounded like a god send. I have extremely high blood pressure and his strong sale point would be that it would remove the need for meds. Liar! My regular doctor flipped out when she found that he had removed me and of course, I went back on meds a few weeks after having it inserted, after 4 readings 200+/110+... amazing he didn't cause me a stroke. That should have been red flag #1 but I figured it was just an error in judgment on his part. I felt no pain with it going in and didn't cramp at all.. spotted for a few hours then it was over.. My first cycle lasted 2 1/2 weeks and the next started a week later.. All side effects I was warned of so didn't really concern myself. I started having phantom kicks (uterus contractions) and stabbing labor pains back in February which I figure was it doing its job trying to get my system on track. I had numbness and pain down my left side and would constantly find myself hunched over in pain.. The bleeding had slowed down so much that I was so grateful and just kept popping pain pills like candy hoping it would go away soon. These last few days have been a flu from hell. Can't leave bed, can't speak, constantly throwing up, loose stools followed by extreme constipation, achy muscle tingling skin.. you name it!! Went to the bathroom earlier and when I wiped, had a small bout of black blood.. Old blood that sometimes you will find at the end of your cycle! I checked the calendar and had indeed finally skipped a cycle.. The cramps and pains have been there as though I was going to start, but no bleeding for a week now.. So apparently to skip a cycle I'm going to be bed ridden with the flu.. I have a 5 year old, a 2 year old and a 7 month old who can't have mommy sick. This has been hell.. I too have experienced terrible headaches, stomach pains, DEPRESSION, short fused tantrums, sitting and crying for hours on end, no passion for life, numbness of limbs, tingling skin, sinus infections, yeast infections, temporary blindness and now spots in my eyes which aren't regaining vision, 5 months ago I dyed my hair and it came out by the chunks, now that the dye is gone, I'm still losing hair and have bawling spots which I blamed on the dye.. Now I wonder..I also look like I'm about 6 months pregnant and people keep asking.. I HATE IT!! its been devastating to my self esteem. I lost so much weight after my boys so I blamed the weight gain on having a girl.. Now I wonder about that too.. The weight is only about 10 pounds but ALL in my belly.. I wonder so much.. I got about 5 posts into this horrified before I called to insist it will come out.. I have to wait 4 weeks.. but I can't wait to find me again.. I'm gonna just stick with condoms until I get my body back. Thank you so much for speaking out on this.. I know the doctor is going to insist that it's not to blame.. but I now know better.. Thank you so much for helping me find answers. ---------------------------------------- May 29th200910:51 So I had my mirena for 4 years. Since then, I have a had some symptoms that I expected and a bunch of symptoms came up that I didn't realize may be related to the mirena. The bleeding was awful for the 1st 9 months....11-15 days of straight bleeding and then 2 weeks later it started all over again. After that it just stopped other than spotting like once a month or not at all. Recently it has just been inconsistent and spotting whenever. I have also been feeling tremendous exhaustion, moodiness that has been so extreme I couldn't deal with myself, consistently achy joints (I am only 29 now), increase in depression, headaches several days a week, constant lower backache and more. I had talked to a couple of friends who told me that they felt so much better once they had theirs removed. So before my annual this year, I decided to do some research and found this site. Some of the experiences women talked about here brought me so much relief because it sounded like they were taking words right out of my head. I couldn't believe how much of my symptoms were likely related to my mirena. I actually started drinking coffee daily just a couple of months after it was inserted because I was so tired I couldn't function. I had even seen my primary doctor who did bloodwork on 2 different occasions and could find no problems. I was just feeling overwhelmed and lost that I felt 60 instead of 29! So I went to my appointment 2 days ago with the decision made to have it removed and the next morning I woke up and my back pain was gone for the 1st time in years. I also felt an unusual sense of energy that afternoon and woke up pretty easily the last 2 mornings. I don't know if it is coincidental or if it really is the mirena, but I am confident in my decision to have had it removed and am looking forward to feeling like myself again! It did not hurt me to be removed. The actual papsmear was more uncomfortable. I will keep you all posted! Note to all of you who had this put in as an easy form of birth control, my doctor wanted me to stay off of hormones for the next 3 months to be sure that the mirena was in fact causing all of these symptoms, so it will be condoms for us......neither of us are very excited about this, and not that it would have changed my decision to remove it, but she told me that part afterward! Good luck and I hope my story helps! ------------------------- May 28th200911:23 PM I had my Mirena placed 8wks after my daughter was born. I have a history of bad reactions to all bc pills on the market, the patch, the ring and a latex allergy (condoms). I didn't want my man to get snipped yet because I was on the fence about having another in a few years. So I opted for the Mirena because it seemed like the answer to all my problems. I "tightened up" quickly after delivery and had to be re-dilated for placement, HUGE ouchie! I bled like a stuck pig and soaked thru pads for almost a week after insertion, I called and was assured it was normal. I had already been diagnosed with PPD at the time of placement so I assumed all the emotional side effects were because of that. Until I joined a group for Mirena users and found that emotional problems were top of the list! My family (especially my relationship with my honey) have all suffered from my short fuse, mood swings, crying jags that can last all day for no reason, anxiety (I have had 3 anxiety attacks in the last 6mnths and never had one before in my life!). I have had constant crippling fatigue and can barely get out of bed! I have a toddler and a 6yo son to keep up with and fall asleep on the couch during commercials! I've had bloating in my midsection, frequent nausea/vomiting, headaches from hell!, constant aches/pains, shooting pain in my reproductive area, infrequent periods/spotting, acne (face AND body), thinning/dull hair. I had an incident of extremely foul-smelling, thick dark discharge that was caused by the Mirena's stopping of my cycle but not allowing the build up that was present to be flushed until a routine pap. I have also had lots of pain during intercourse followed by bleeding afterwards and that is when I can bring myself to have sex! I'm 25 and have a very low/non-existent sex drive! My honey is finding out thru his insurance how much a vasectomy will be and if we choose to have another child, we'll just have to have it reversed. I can't live like this, I have kids, I have family and friends that I miss, I want my life back. The only way to get it back is to get the Mirena OUT of my body. 12:22 PM | Permalink | click to add a comment May 17, 2009
I believe the Mirena was in direct relation to my developing anxiety, migraines and eventual miscarriage with complications after removal. The makers of this device states that the hormone stays within the uterus, but how can that be? Being one who doesn't tolerate artificial hormones well at all, my doc suggested this IUC stating the same. Ridiculous!!! I bled for 6 months after insertion...was told to wait it out. I developed anxiety which led to 911 calls thinking I was having a heart attack. I also had increasing amount of headaches and dizziness. After two years of increasing medical problems, I had the Mirena removed. Not surprising, my headaches and dizziness decreased, however, anxiety is still a problem, but not as bad as before when using the Mirena. As for getting pregnant after removal...my best friend and I had almost identical experiences with our miscarriage. Both of us had the IUC removed, both of us became pregnant, both of us miscarried around 5-6 weeks and the development of this whole experience has many more similar details that are more than coincidence. Fortunately, my friend was ok, however, I ended up hemorrhaging and retained tissue/clot and have been dealing with this for nearly a month. I'm extremely anemic and stressed. I KNOW that the Mirena damaged my uterus and I now terribly fearful to try to get pregnant again because of the horrible experience I had. 1:43 PM | Permalink | click to add a comment
I had my daughter in Sept. 2009. 6 weeks later I had the Mirena put in. I would first like to say that I was told it would not hurt going in. I screamed and cried at the top of my lungs it hurt sooo bad. The OB blamed it on a tilted cervix. I have since been irritable, always in a fog, very crampy, constipated, terrible acne (that I've never had before), developed hemorrhoids, Weight gain, and I have no sex drive. Now new symptoms occur. I am exhausted. I struggle everyday to get out of bed. I have a 2 year old and a 8 month old. Sadly this is affecting my parenting. I am having severe headaches. Now I am constantly nauseous. After I eat I am getting very sick for like an hour. I am extremely weak and can barely even walk. I shake uncontrollably also. Please, anyone with any info. please let me know. I am getting this thing out ASAP, but I am scared to death of the pain when it comes out and I am extremely worried that it has done some damage to my body. my email is fireflies10105 at yahoo. please I need advice!! 1:36 PM | Permalink | 2 comments
A Story from Lisa, emailed to me today.......
Lisa. 12:46 PM | Permalink | 2 comments July 6, 2008
Hi,and welcome,Im 48 and had Mirena to control heavy periods not fo contraception,I thought it was the best thing ever until a few months ago, read my story below.........
My Mirena was removed on 29th May 2008,it was inserted September 2004. I had the Mirena put in four years ago,I had terrible pain the day after, it was that bad I was going to go to the hospital Emergency to get the thing out but I put up(the worst thing I done in my life, Im paying for it now) with it and it and the pain got a bit better, had a lot of bleeding (spotting) for the first six months and then it finally went away. For the first year I thought Mirena was Great but then the problems started.I started to gain a lot of weight, facial hair,Very sore breasts, I also had a lump removed from my left breast a couple of years ago, but I didnt know until recently that it was most likely caused by Mirena. Some of the other problems I had, My stomach bloated, I look like I'm six months pregnant ,I have a cyst on my left ovary, dry skin, acne, strange depression, which I have Never had before in my life, headaches, and the Worst of all I had to have my Thyroids REMOVED on 1st Nov 2006 and I'm pretty sure that was caused by Mirena as well, so now I have to take thyroid Medication for the rest of my life,I had the Mirena removed as soon as I done some searching on the internet for my unexplained medical problems, mainly my weight as I had weighed about the same my whole adult life and now I had put on a few stone and now I have to try and lose it,as for my thyroid I have trouble getting the Meds right its a real pain, blood tests all the time.I just dont feel I have much left in my life, depressed, sick all the time. I eat well as I have high cholesterol so its not that I over ate,I noticed you do feel a lot more like eating sweet things. I found a site called www.curezone.com and found out there are thousands of woman, girls with the same problems as myself and that there is a class action law suit going on to Sue. Its worth having a look at this site it helped me a lot.I feel so bad I dont go out anymore I dont see friends or family I'm to depressed about my weight now. I am in the process of trying to find out if there is a Class Action Law Suit in Australia. If anyone knows of a Class Action in Australia could they Please let me know. After having the Mirena removed about 6 weeks ago I thought I was doing ok only a bit of spotting, but about 3 weeks after having it removed I got my period and the pain was unbearable,I was in agony stomach cramps and I bleed so much I thought I was going to die from blood loss, also the scariest was the huge blood clots, very scary, must of been four years of period in 1 week I couldnt believe how bad it was, I felt really sick and weak, but thank goodness its eased off now after a week. I just hope now I might slowly start and feel like my old self. Im also on medication for heart palpatations, thanks to Mirena ,I get Heart palpitations (SVT) a few times a week, but it was under control with NO medication, but it got worse the last couple of years I had Mirena and I didnt know it was Mirena making it worse until recently. I had my heart palpitations just after my thyroid removal op and was put on ecg and my heart rate was 176 Beats per Minute I was rushed to Intensive Care and I had to have an injection called Impending Doom (It makes you feel you are going to die) to slow my heart rate,it worked and I was kept in intensive car for 3 days, very scary thing to go through I hope I never have to go through that again, and now I also take Magnesium to help control them as well as Metoprolol which I have been on for some years and I recently read that if you are on Mirena it increases the side effects of Metoprolol. So if you have had any bad experiences with Mirena please let us know,it will help others with their problems, hopefully. I just wish I never got Mirena and my advice is DONT its not Worth the risk,if the Doctors had of told me about the BAD side effects I would NEVER of had it put in. Sorry about going on so long, All the best to you all, Thanks, Net.
UPDATE Well Im booked in for hystorectomy on April 7th 2009, Im hoping that will sort out the hormonal problems I have since Mirena, that I am still trying to fix.
My Heart Palpitations have STOPPED since Mirena was removed
I have had it out for over 198 days 20 hours now, my painful breasts feel normal again,I hav'nt lost any weight yet, but will soon hopefully,I do feel a lot better but still get some of the symtoms back just before my period. I DONT get my heart palpitations much anymore either what a relief that is, so I know it WAS Mirena making them worse. I get sooo mad when i think of what Mirena done to me and all the other women and how bad some of their side effects have been. I get mad when I read some of the other ladies stories and the terrible things they have gone through , Perforations, Miscarriages, IUD's lost in their body, Hystorectomy, and the rest. I want to wish them all the best, and we WILL get Better and Bayer ,(Mirena ) will PAY some day for what they have done to US..the more complaints to them, the quicker it will be taken off the market, hopefully.
My SVT ECG test result. 176 BPM
